David Slater, photographer, asked Wikipedia to remove the famous picture of a monkey who took a selfie of its own but the organization refused for a sole reason that it belongs to the public since a copyright cannot be vested to an animal.

Slater went to Sulawesi, Indonesia to take photographs of Celebes crested macaques when one of these secretly picked up his camera and taking hundreds of photos including itself with grinning closeup shots.

Though many of these were blurry but there were also high quality stunning images including the 'monkey selfie' of a grinning macaque.

Photographer's request was refused by Wikipedia refused a photographer's requests to remove the image of a monkey taking a selfie because the animal itself took it on its own, so basically this voids to have him own the copyright.

But now, Slater is on the move to go against Wikimedia (owned by Wikipedia) by taking legal action regarding the uploading of photo without his permission.

He also said that Wikimedia's behavior impacted his living due to decrease of his income.

"It’s all based on a technicality. I own the photo but because the monkey pressed the trigger and took the photo, they’re claiming the monkey owns the copyright" -David Slater

No latest statement from Wikimedia and Wikipedia regarding the legal action taken against them by the photographer David Slater at this time.
