SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA -- A seven-day-old baby was found alive after five days since he was abandoned at the bottom of a storm drain in Australia

The newborn baby was recovered from a 9ft (2.4m) deep pipe, with a concrete slab weighing 440 lbs (200 kg) still wrapped in a blanket from a hospital.

He was left for dead by his own mother and left him with no food or water inside this drain pipe. Fortunately, a cyclist and two other guys near the area heard an unusual noise coming from the pit.

David Otte, the cyclist, first could not believe that the faint sound he was hearing was from a baby but when he went closer to the storm drain, he was convinced that there was a baby down there.
“We actually thought it was a kitten at first, but when we went down there we could hear exactly what it was, you could definitely tell it was a baby screaming.”

Once they discovered the baby down the drain covered with a 200-kilogram concrete slab, they immediately called a help from the police officers.

A combined effort of six men was needed to rescue the 7-day-old newborn baby boy.

According to the report of Mirror, New South Wales Senior Constable Mark McAlister was among the first on the scene. He said:
“It was a bit surreal actually.

“How could someone do it? I, myself, have kids and we’re expecting a baby in a few more months so it’s not good that someone’s going through this and has done this to a little one.”

Officers was looking for an angle on how the baby went down there. A possible scenario they were looking at was he was forcefully entered through a small opening to the drain that could possibly caused him internal injuries due to the fall along with a concrete slab wrapped on him.

The baby's photo was uploaded in social media and circulated widely gathering different comments and reactions.

The abandoned child is now on stable condition under the care of Westmead Children's Hospital.

David, who first heard the baby down the drain, together with his wife and daughter gave three sets of baby clothes as well as a new baby blanket, face washer and a towel.
“We wanted to see him, but the hospital said we weren’t able to at the moment,” he said.

“We would all really love a chance to see him again. Today has been such an emotional experience for everyone,"
said David.

Whole Otte family wanted to give this little boy some gifts because they were moved due to the fact that "he really doesn't have anything".

“We have family, we have each other. He didn’t have anything,” Mrs. Otte added.

Baby's mother was charged with attempted murder of her own child and is set to appear in court.

The newborn baby most likely survived because of the concrete slab wrapped around him that served as an insulation that protected him from fluctuating weather in Sydney.

Officers said that they haven't seen anything like this before.
