Kentex Manufacturing Corporation is set to give P8,000 to the families of 72 deaths and survivors of fire incident happened in their slipper factory in Valenzuela City last Wednesday.

Kentex, the company that owns the burnt slipper factory and warehouse based in Valenzuela City is giving P8,000 to the families of the 72 deaths and survivors of the fire incident happened last Wednesday.

According to the afternoon segment of GMA News TV known as "Balitanghali" on Saturday, the proposed amount to be given is the workers' salary due for the first half of the month. This statement came from the lwayer of Kentex Manufacturing Corporation, Atty. Renato Paraiso.

Also, that amount to be given is higher than the P5,500 which was first reported.

Financial assistance will still be provided by the said footwear company on top of the P8,000 as promised to the survivors and to the families of the 72 employees killed in the incident.

However, Valenzual City Mayor Rex Gatchalian is disappointed to the amount and clearly said that this is not enough. He also expressed his disappointment toward the company's way to settle its liabilities.

Labor union like BMP is alarmed on the issue. They believe that not only Kentex should be held accountable for the incident but also the local government. BMP President Leody De Guzman questioning how this kind of company like Kentex stays in business for many years despite violating the fire and safety standards.

In the report provided by AFP, DOLE Secretary said that the deaths of 72 workers in the fire uncovered the cruel conditions of workers across the nation.
"The deaths should serve as a wake-up call for businessmen to stop these abuses... they should give their employees dignity," Department of Labor and Employment Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz told AFP.

One of the obvious violations of the slipper factory is the barred windows on the second floor which the authorities are blaming at. Many workers were trapped in this level that led to their deaths.

On the other side, Kentex lawyer defended that the windows were secured with steel bars to prevent theft.
