How "Sim-swap scam" victim almost lost P48,000 from his account


Beware of the new scam called sim-swap. The new scam will give an access to your personal and banking accounts.

Ian Caballero, the victim of cyber fraud, has disclosed his petrifying experience he has gone through. He almost lost P48,000 from his account through fund transfer.

He recounted what happened in an interview with ABS-CBN News.

He noticed that something's going on when the signal on his phone went off randomly. He called his mobile network provider's hotline for this trouble. He found out and was told that he made a request for a sim replacement. He said that it's impossible because he was asleep that time. So, he requested the new sim to be blocked immediately. However, that immediate action didn't stop the scam.

He couldn't manage his accounts anymore and was dismissed from all his online accounts when he checked his computer. He said that he couldn't access all his personal accounts which he checked on Outlook.

He couldn't log in to his three Gmail accounts. He also couldn't access his Facebook on his iPhone. Then, he figured out that it was all because of recovery option. His number was used as recovery option.

He said that the scammer used his mobile number to have an access to his email. What's terrifying is that the scammer even got the access to his internet banking account.

Using his online banking account, a request to transfer money was made. He almost lost P48,000. Fortunately, the transaction made wasn't processed yet totally, so he was able to retrieve the amount.

Thereafter, he went to the Globe Business Center in SM North Edsa for inquiries. He believed that that's the place where the scammer started it.

When he got there,they told him that a man professed and brought his authorization letter requesting for a sim replacement.

Globe made a statement regarding this matter saying that it will work with the authorities to provide help for its customer. They promised to do something about this cyber fraud and give him justice. However, the establishment hasn't given any CCTV footage of the incident since it happened.

The company said that they are fully aware of this problem and it happens randomly. So they're working on a campaign that will instruct and provide the individuals protection against cyber fraud. It will also motivate the customers to be more cautious in using and managing their private information online and offline.
