Mandaue City, Cebu - A pastor and a basketball coach died in a car smash involving 10 vehicles. The accident also left atleast 7 people wounded.

Manolet ‘Badz” Subang, 28, of Lamac, Consolacion town died on the spot. He was a pastor of the Living Word Christian Fellowship.

He was driving his motorcycle when the driver of the 10-wheeler Isuzu dropside truck lost control and rammed four motorcycles, two taxis, an Isuzu Elf, a jeepney and a Kia Sportage car before stopping 500 meters from the first point of impact.

Subang was thrown off his motorbike, landed on the pavement and was run over by the truck.

The seven people injured in the accident were identified as Honda XRM driver, Alberto Tan, 59, of Liloan town; Jay Paul Tan, 25, of Polpogan, Consolacion town; and the five jeepney passengers Irene Salgado of Consolacion, 28; Ramil Campus, 43, of Kamputhaw; Alemar Algar, 19; Gee-an Pradia, 8; and Rolly Pradia, 5.

The Isuzu dropside van (GLC-940) driven by Nelson Isobal, 50, was delivering sacks of sugar to Cebu City from Sogod town, northern Cebu.

The unfortunate chain of events started when the van, which was also traveling to Cebu City, lost its brakes.

The accident happened at 8:45 a.m. along the national highway of M.C. Briones Street corner H. Abellana Street in Basak Mandaue City.

The van hit four motorcycles (including one owned by the Traffic Enforcement Agency of Mandaue), a jeepney, two Toyota Corolla Sedan, and Kia Sportage wagon, said PO2 Nelson Sadili of the Mandaue City Police Office Traffic Management Unit (MCPO-TMU).

The van, which rammed all of the vehicles within 500 meters, hit four vehicles before running over Subang. Except for a parked motorcycle, all vehicles involved were travelling to Cebu City.

Isobal, who hails from Victorias City, Negros Occidental, claimed that the van he was driving had a brake failure, but he will still be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to properties, Sadili said.

The driver was detained at the Basak Police Station. He will face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, multiple physical injuries and damage to properties.
