Effective way to quit smoking: Abruptly or gradually?

A doctor shares an effective way to help you quit your bad habit.

Smoking is more than just a physical craving. Once nicotine has made your body its home, it is almost impossible to remove it out of your system. Chain smokers who pursue to stop their cigarette addiction may feel indecisive in choosing a way to stop smoking. Should they stop it gradually, or put it to a halt abruptly?

While there are still no scientific research conducted to answer this question, a doctor from St. Luke's Medical Centre shed some light to this topic. In a recent interview with DZMM, Dr. Windfield Tan said that it is likely for a smoker to succeed in quitting if he will do it gradually.

In handling cases of smokers, Dr. Tan observed that people who cut down their cigarette consumption slowly poses a higher chance to quit because most of the times, people who restrain themselves completely from smoking are faced with the problem of sudden urge to taste cigarette again.

The abrupt method--also known as 'cold turkey'--appeared unreliable in quitting smoking mainly because it only increases the urge to smoke more. "After ng quitting, may mga experience po sila na strong urge [to smoke], 'yun talaga ang number one factor na magpapa-relapse," Tan stated.

Moreover, Tan also warned about the alternatives in smoking such as nicotine chewing gum and patch, stressing that it is important to consult a doctor before trying any one of these.

If you are one of those who are trying to quit their bad habit, Tan offered a piece of advice. According to him, a smoker's self-motivation, as well as support from his friends and family, is vital to succeed in quitting. If you are trying to quit, you should also have a great self-control to stop your sudden urges.
