After the giant squid, a strange creature looking like a ball of spaghetti was filmed underwater in Angola.

It's not surprising to find alien-like creatures lurking in the deep sea. But what about something that looks like it fell off your dinner plate, then grew a head?

BP workers were filming 4,000 feet under the sea off the coast of Angola with a remotely operated underwater vehicle when they captured footage of this thing - which they nicknamed the flying spaghetti monster.

The team of oil and gas workers spotted the bizarre-looking creature - later identified as a siphonophore.

Siphonophores are colonial animals which means that rather than a single organism this is actually a colony of thousands of individual zooids.

They nicknamed it the "Flying Spaghetti Monster" after the god of the satirical religion Pastafarianism.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) is the deity of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster or Pastafarianism (a portmanteau of pasta and Rastafarian), a social movement that promotes a light-hearted view of religion and opposes the teaching of intelligent design and creationism in public schools.

The team passed the footage on to Daniel Jones of the National Oceanography Centre in Britain.

Jones is part of a project called Serpent, which uses videos such as these - taken by oil riggers and other people working in the deep sea.

"The creature appears spaghetti-like because the stem is contracted up so that all the feeding zooids are jam-packed together," Daniel Jones, a deep-sea ecology researcher, told The Huffington Post.

"To my knowledge this creature has only been observed a handful of times," he added.
