Watch: Live maggot found inside a woman's lip

Doctor removed an inch long, grape-sized live maggot living in woman's lip.

This video has gone viral after clocking up hundreds of thousands of views. It shows the removal of live maggots from her bulging lips.

In a minute-and-a-half long clip, you can see the surgeon trying hard to remove the larvae. This has caused a painful-looking round swelling on woman's top lip. It's read, sore and nearly like a size of a grape. Using long tweezers, the doctor with white gloves tried to pull out the larvae out. It seemed stuck inside her lip, so the doctor was forced to tug it in circular motions repeatedly.

What's more horrifying was, when the doctor swung the tweezers, more worms appeared. The larvae resisted being removed, so it took more than a minute to pull it out from her face. As the process went through, the woman didn't appear to be in pain. When the inch long white creature was finally removed, the camera zoomed in on it.

The video garnered 550,000 views since it was posted on Youtube. It's not clear yet where the footage was filmed or how the maggot got inside the woman's lip in the first place.

This woman appears to be suffering from oral myiasis. It's a rare disease caused by larvae of certain dipteran flies. It is mostly reported in developing countries and in the tropics. This condition occurs when larvae of flies, parasites, invade the tissue of the mouth or nose.

The larvae feed on the host's living or dead tissue, liquid substance, or ingested food. Those with poorer social backgrounds and people who have wounds or other injury on their faces are at risk of this rare disease. Those who live in regions with a warmer climate can also suffer from this.

It's extremely dangerous because of high possibility of penetration into the brain. Infestation of the nose and ears make things worse. The fatality rate is 8 percent in such cases. However, according to a report, it's very rare to see larvae invade the lips or the mouth. It only happens when a parasite gets into the skin through wounds. However, it's warned that there is specific type of flies that can even make its way into healthy skin.
