BEWARE: Hidden danger of wearing cheap contact lenses

Man almost lost his eyesight for wearing cheap contact lenses.

Contact lenses have completely evolved from a simple medical device to a fashion trend. Many people wear contact lenses nowadays even if they don't exhibit an eyesight problem. A lot of people choose contacts over eyeglasses because it covers both fashion and function.

However, wearing contact lenses is not as safe as you think. Research show that improperly wearing cheap and unfit contact lenses may damage your eyesight permanently. This man's case will change your vision forever.

23-year old Julian Hamlin from South Carolina first bought a pair of $15 contact lenses on 2010. He wore the pair regularly until it was worn out and needed replacement. Every few months, he replaces and properly disinfects his contact lenses that's why he was shocked when he woke up one morning on March 2012 with an eye infection.

Doctors diagnosed him with a severe corneal ulcer on his left eye which later developed into glaucoma. Hamlin spent almost $250,000 for several corneal transplants and surgeries. Due to this, his daily life and job was badly affected.

My left eye is completely blurry; it’s been a big transition. I’ve had to miss so many days of work, and I can’t lift anything over 25 pounds because it increases the pressure in my eyes, so I’m limited in my jobs.

Medical experts warn us about prolonged wearing of contact lenses, especially the cheap ones. Usually, an optalmologist's prescription is needed to buy a pair of contacts but a lot of them can be bought easily today at a cheap price. More often that not, those cheap contact lenses contain eye-irritating dyes which are not approved by the FDA.
Moreover, prolonged wearing of contact lenses can reduce the oxygen circulation in your eyes. Because they are situated just above the cornea, the cheap lenses cause the eye to not get enough oxygen it needed. It can also cause dryness and abrasions, making your eye more vulnerable to infections.

According to, wearing coloured contact lenses can also be a root of eyesight problems:

Many modern day contact lenses have increased silicone content, which improves oxygen permeability, however, due to their colouring, this is not true of cosmetic lenses and can therefore increase the chance of getting a blinding infection.

There's no harm in wearing contact lenses as long as you properly wear the right one. To avoid eyesight problems, one should avoid buying cheap contact lenses and should only buy from registered optician.
