Manila Auxiliary Bishop confirms that the government trying to 'hide' the poor from the visitors of APEC Summit.

As part of the preparation for the upcoming Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit held in the country, the government is planning to donate Php4,000 to individual street-dwellers to rent temporary homes until the 4-day event is finished.

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is confirmed to be giving away four thousand pesos worth of temporary housing assistance to the homeless families for them to 'hide' during the event that will take place in Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City. This information was confirmed by Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo.

This is the government's last-ditch effort to spare the streets of Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) from the presence of the street dwellers. They were instructed to spend the money in finding themselves a temporary home while the event is on going to prevent being what they called a 'public nuisance'.

United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) described the government's band-aid solution of hiding the street dwellers as 'shameful'. Mon Ilagan, UNA spokesman stated:

Window dressing poverty remains as this administration’s biggest moral scandal. And now it is resorting to the same tactics it did when Pope Francis visited Manila in January.

It was compared from the rumor that the same tactic was also used when Pope Francis paid a visit in the country last January. Controversial photos of street children tied to a pole went viral in the public but was debunked as hoax.

Bakit kailangan mong itago sila? Para ba pagtakpan ang kapalpakan ng gobyerno? Yan ang nakakahiya. (Why do you need to hide them? To cover the faults of the government? That is shameful.) Ilagan added.

On the other hand, MalacaƱang denied the allegation that it is trying to hide the street dwellers for the event. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said that the modified conditional cash transfer is a part of an existing program by the DSWD.

Among the APEC guests to arrive on Philippines are United States (US) president Barack Obama along with Russian president Vladimir Putin. The government is rumored to be spending a total of 7.9 billion pesos to host the summit which was comparatively massive in contrast to its poor plan to hide poverty in the country.
