READ: Student verifies 'Welcome to the HIV world' urban legend in Recto

The dreaded HIV syringe myth comes to life as a student claims he witnessed it first-hand.

Do you still remember the disturbing urban legend about people spreading human immunodeficiency virus-infected blood in Recto? According to the infamous story, some people who are infected with HIV will prey upon innocent people with the use of a syringe. Usually, this act is done in crowded places like Quiapo or Recto. This cruel method's ulterior motive is to pass the virus to the unsuspecting victim.

As expected, the news spread like wildfire in the social networking sites. The social media community were equally alarmed and terrified with the story only to find out it was not true after all. The whole thing was debunked as a myth due to the story's inconsistency.
Recently, the rumor resurfaced when a student from University of the East attest to the urban legend, claiming that he experienced it first-hand. His story once again opened discussions about the truthfulness and potential danger of the incident. Facebook user Ian de Guzman warns the public about his encounter that allegedly took place near his university in Recto.

As of writing this, his Facebook post already reached more than 2,600 likes in less than six hours. It has also been a subject of debate on whether or not incidents like these truly exists in real life. If proven to be real, his story will confirm the dreaded 'Welcome to the HIV world' myth.

Usually, stories like this often came from word of mouth and hearsay. There is still no concrete evidence shown to confirm that incidents like these are really happening and not just a rumor to scare people. Whether the whole thing is fabricated or not, it always pays to be aware on what is happening around you. A Facebook user commented:

You need to report sa UE admin ang nakita mo para maireport nila sa pulis. Para magkaroon ng pulis visibility sa area. And para malaman nila na meron nabiktimang studyante nila ng di na madagdagan pa. (You need to report what you saw to the admin so that it can be reported to the police. In order to have police visibility in the area. And so that the number of student victims will no longer increase.)

If there is one thing that de Guzman's story will teach us, it is that public is not as safe as we think it is. To avoid incidents similar to this one, always remember to pay attention to your surroundings especially when you're in a public setting and don't hesitate to report any suspicious act you see.
