Are you aware of the risks you exposed your self to when you are sleep deprived? There's a good reason why our mothers never let us skip sleep as a child.

Sleep deprivation happens to most of us on a regular basis. Research shows that young people are more prone to lack of sleep than adults because of their tendency to stay up late due to the availability of the internet. We are all guilty of this, and though we may brush it aside as a mild case, a deeper study reveals that your body could be suffering from the life-threatening consequences of lack of sleep.

In general, average human beings need 8 to 10 hours of sleep in order to function effectively. However, our time to sleep is often overlooked because of our busy schedule. According to TED-ed, 30% of adults in America suffer from sleep deprivation regularly while it affects a higher number of adolescents with 60% rate.

In addition to these, people who lack sleep are more likely to experience inflammations, hallucination, high blood pressure and even diabetes and obesity.

The article 'Are Filipinos Getting Enough Sleep' published by Manila Bulletin discusses the threats of sleeplessness, which is also common among Filipinos.

Sleep disorders like sleep deprivation and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)are becoming a global health concern as they are often left untreated due to lack of awareness of the public and healthcare professionals.

Aside from these mild cases, do you know that sleeplessness can lead you to untimely death? In 2014, a soccer fan died while staying awake for 48 hours to watch the world cup. His death was linked to stroke, but further studies concluded that sleep deprivation increased the chances of having a stroke by 4.5 times.
