56 girls allegedly lost their lives from using sanitary pads

A public service message from a hospital in India warns that your sanitary pad can kill you.

On average, a woman will spend 40 years of her entire life menstruating. During that course, she will need various products to deal with her menstrual blood. In that case, one will never run out of choices when it comes to sanitary pads, tampons etc. However, are you aware that incorrect use of sanitary pads or tampons may take its toll on your health?

The medical concerns of using sanitary pads has been a long debated issue. It has been uncovered many times before yet a lot of women who uses sanitary napkin and tampon remain oblivious to the danger they are exposing themselves into. In the past few years, the cases of illness--sometimes even death-- with link to incorrect or prolonged use of sanitary pads have increased.

Recently, a concerned citizen from social networking site Facebook posted a message to inform other women or girls who are still using various brands of absorbent sanitary pads. According to the post, a public service message from Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India warns that 56 girls have died from using sanitary napkin. The post reads:

The number of women who uses sanitary pads and tampons in dealing with menstruation is much higher than those who prefer to use menstrual cup or clothepad. Not to mention that these alternatives are safer, environment-friendly and cheaper compared to pads and tampons.

Most sanitary pads and tampons are made from bleached rayon, cotton and plastic. When processed, these materials produce harmful chemicals such as carbon disulphide, sulfuric acid, chlorine, and caustic soda, which are proven to affect a woman's health and in worst cases, may even cause ovarian cancer.
The side effects from being exposed to these chemicals ranges from nausea, vomiting, chest pain and headaches. Moreover, a report from www.collective-evolution.com about the side effects of using pads and tampons says:

Tampons and pads are bleached using chlorine, which results in the production of dioxin, a chemical linked to breast cancer, endometriosis, immune system suppression, and various other ailments.

On the other hand, although prolonged wearing of napkin or tampon is not advisable, there is little to no evidence at all that wearing a single pad for a day can cause death, in contrast to what the post claimed. However, prolonged use of pads or tampon may cause Toxic Shock Syndrome which can be fatal.

To avoid the harmful effects of using pads or tampons, there are a lot of over-the-counter alternatives which can help you deal with your menstruation in a safer way. If you are used in wearing pads, always keep in mind to change it every 4-5 hours to avoid the build up of fungus and bacteria.

For women, having a monthly menstrual cycle is mentally-stressing, so reduce your worries by keeping these things in mind next time you encounter your period.
