Pinoy seafarer commits suicide after getting fired

Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that a foul play was involved in the suicide case of the distraught seafarer.

Overseas workers are given the title as 'bagong bayani' or modern heroes for a reason. If being a regular worker is already stressing enough, then what more for an overseas worker who works far away from home? Distance, stress, weariness and homesickness can really take a toll on an individual.

This is exactly what happened to a distressed seafarer who ended his life after being fired from his job. Instead of a feisty celebration, the family of John Gregg Elejan will be facing a mournful holiday after the loss of their family man who ended his own life.

According to a recent report in Inquirer, 31-year old Elejan was found dead inside his former employer's crewing office in Manila on Saturday. The immediate cause of death is aphyxiation after he hanged himself on the neck using a green waterhose at the offices of Status Maritime Corporation.
Upon being discovered in his ghastly state, witnesses quickly responded and rushed Elejan on a nearby hospital where he was declared dead on arrival late Saturday afternoon. Before the incident, Elejan's employer fired him out of the company due to an unspecified 'bad behavior' report.

Elejan's Facebook photos portrayed a happy man who always has a smile on his face. However, due to his suicide, this was proven to be a facade. Because of this, speculations about his death arise within the social media.

Depression prior to being fired is what apparently pushed Elejan on the edge and resort to ending his life. Unfortunately, Elejan's case is not the first of its kind. According to a research from Swansea University, seafaring as a profession has the second highest rate of suicide in the world next to coal mining.

On the other hand, authorities are looking at the angle of a possible foul play in Elejan's death. People all over social media expressed their support and condolence to the family of Elejan. They are also hoping that the investigation will finally put an end in all speculations surrounding Elejan's death.
