Drunken man dies after hugging 'Goodbye Philippines'

This man ended his year with a literal blast after he hugged a lit firecracker which led to his untimely death.

MANILA, Philippines-- Kristina Serrano was not expecting that she will welcome the New Year with a tragedy when her live-in partner died after hugging a lit firecracker on the early morning of New Year at Buenos Aires St., Sta. Mesa, Manila.

According to a recent report in Philstar, the victim was identified as Ronald Vericio, 45 years old. Serrano said in an interview that Vericio was reportedly drunk and when the clock strikes midnight, he decided to light a firework. Around 12:10 a.m on January 1, Vericio ignited a massive firecracker known as 'Goodbye Philippines'.

Nobody knows for sure what was going on in his mind when he did it, but drunken Vericio suddenly hugged the lit firecracker and it exploded right in his face. One of the witnesses allegedly saw the incident happen and said, "Sinindihan nya tapos niyakap nya yung Goodbye Philippines." (He lit and hugged Goodbye Philippines)
According to a report from radio dzMM, the onlookers quickly responded and the victim was immediately rushed to the Ospital ng Sampaloc and was later transferred to the Ospital ng Manila Medical Center. There, the doctors attempted to revive him but the severely wounded victim was declared dead at 1:45 a.m.

On the other hand, Philippine National Police (PNP) initally warned the public about using this deadly firecracker which they described as "like a bomb" when it blows up. Despite of this warning, stubborn people are still buying the banned firecracker; completely oblivious to the danger that they are exposing themselves into.

Another victim of "Goodbye Philippines" has been recorded at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center. The victim--who was identified as Jerry Flores--suffered severe injuries after stepping on the firecracker who failed to be lit thinking that it will not explode. Doctors have to amputate his left foot after being broken into pieces.
