Remember the Pinay engineer who sat with Obama at the APEC summit? Here she is now, and she brings an even more exciting news!

Engineer Aisa Mijeno is one of the living proof that Filipinos never run out of brilliant innovations and ideas to contribute to the world. On the previous year, Mijeno made a groundbreaking invention with a literally 'brilliant' idea of creating lamps powered with salt and water. The Pinay engineer was inspired from her 2011 trip to Kalinga Highlands thus she came up with the idea to create a lamp that doesn't need electricity, batteries or kerosene to work.

Mijeno was not alone on this invention, her brother Ralph and and electrical engineer Oscar Bryan Magtibay helped her to came up with the lamp. They were inspired from the Butbut tribe in Buscalan who made fires and walked for hours to the nearest town just to buy fuel to power their lamps. Moreover, the lamps they invented will prevent families from turning into more dangerous alternative such as kerosene.

The invention is more commonly known as SALt or Sustainable Alternative Lighting and is highly efficient especially in rural areas where it is difficult to generate electricity, not mentioning the fact that electricity is also expensive. SALt only requires two tablespoons of salt in a glass water. Despite of the low cost of producing the lamp, it doesn't affect its quality. Her invention produces brightness similar to the light of a low-LED bulb and equivalent to seven candles which could last for eight hours.

The Science behind it is simple, and Mijeno herself explained how the lamp works. According to her, there have been existing technologies similar to her invention. According to a recent report from local blog When in Manila, the engineer was quoted saying:

If you did the lemon-battery experiment, that’s basically it. Two different metals submerged in electrolytes will produce electricity. For us, we used saltwater. It is an open science, so I will not be surprised if there are existing similar technologies developed out there.

Because of her innovation, Mijeno has come face to face with some of the most powerful and influential men in the world including US President Barack Obama and Chinese businessman Jack Ma in a forum about clean technology and climate change which is a part of the three-day 2015 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in the country last November. Both Obama and Ma, as well as other atendees of the summit admired Mejina for her resourcefulness.

Today, Mijeno brings a more thrilling news as she reveals that SALt lamps will finally be available this year. Despite of her invention, she lacks the fund to produce it and this issue was also raised in the APEC summit. However, in a recent radio interview with Ted Failon at DZMM, Mijeno said that they have already approached several businessmen and scientists who could aid in releasing the product to the local market.

The lamps are currently being mass-produced at the rate of 500 lamps per day in BiƱan, Laguna. The best part of all is that it will be sold for less than P500!
What's more thrilling is that several organizations volunteered to distribute SALt lamps for free to other families. On the other hand, Mileno has also talked with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines to arrange the patent of the lamps.
