Tension Increases; China Deploys Missiles in South China Sea

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry issued statement about a confirmed existence of missile batteries in the disputed South China Sea.

In a report by CNN, Taiwan have first-hand intelligence that surface-to-air missiles was stored in the Paracel chain in the area disputed by China and its neighbor countries.

"The Taiwanese Defense Ministry has learned of China's deployment of surface-to-air missiles on the Woody Island in the Paracel Islands. The Republic of China military is closely monitoring further development of the situation," the statement said.

It looks like that the deployment of missiles seen in a commercial satellite imagery came after US President Barack Obama call to stop militarization in the disputed waters.

China responds to the news saying that it was just an attempt by the Western media to create rumour.

Taiwan called for cooperation on the parties involved, "Regarding China's military deployment in the region, the Taiwanese Defense calls on cooperation from all parties to safeguard the South China Sea's peace and stability, and avoid any unilateral action that will escalate tension."

Other countries around the South China Sea, including Taiwan, have developed islands in the disputed waters, including the construction of airstrips capable of handling military aircraft.

But China has repeatedly denied these allegations saying that constructions on relevant islands are mainly to provide public service to the international community as well as to facilitate rescue, fishery and medical operations.

A visiting fellow from the Center for Asia-Pacific Cooperation and Governance at Shanghai’s Fudan University said that it was a provocation of the China government on the small countries claiming territories.

Tensions have ratcheted up as China has reclaimed more 2,000 acres of land in a massive dredging operation in the Spratly Islands, turning sandbars into islands equipped with airfields, ports and lighthouses.

Philippines brought this issue to the United Nations Commission on Laws of the Seas (UNCLOS).

Is this a glimpse on a probable World War 3?
