The effective implementation of the Anti-Hazing Law is in question again after a facebook post of a UP-CMC alumna goes viral.
She said that she was abused psychologically and physically by a student organization she had joined five years ago.
She did not named the organization but UP SAMASKOM already aired out that they are not doing hazing rites on their org.
During the initiation rites, she was screamed at, cursed and made fun by the organization’s members and alumni.
The UP alumna also recalled the final rites where she was blindfolded for 12 hours with 5-peso coin pressed in her eyes. She also made ate a whole red chili pepper, spoonfuls of coffee powder and weird food mixes.
She was also asked to strip naked and perform physical exercises while other members drenched her with cold water.
The worst thing is that the members placed a dog’s penis inside her mouth.
She survived the hazing and was accepted as a member of the organization, but she felt disturbed from its members.
“After a few months of being active, I hid from the world. I couldn't see them as people who I can be real friends with. I couldn't see the purpose of everything I went through,” she added.
She called the administration of university to stop this culture, “To the orgs and UP admin, I hope you don't wait until someone commits suicide because of the pressure of applying for orgs like that.”
The UP-CMC released a statement denouncing the dehumanizing practices of hazing in the university, organizations, fraternities and sororities.
After Republic Act No. 8049 or the Anti-hazing law was implemented last 2005, only one conviction have happened.
Our government together with school administrations must look and be the face of the implementation of this law after two Alpha Phi Omega members from the University of the Philippines Los Banos sentenced to reclusion perpetua regarding the death of UPLB student Marlon Villanueva in 2006.
