MANILA, Philippines-- Very little was left of what used to be the University of the East (UE) campus in Recto, Manila after a conflagration broke out and destroyed two buildings and a university chapel on Saturday morning, April 2.

According to a report published in CNN Philippines, the fire started at about 9:35 a.m at the second floor of the College of Arts and Sciences building and quickly spread to the surrounding buildings. It only took minutes before the College of Engineering and university chapel was engulfed by the fire as well.

The fire alarm was raised to Task Force Charlie or the eighth level alarm which required assistance from surrounding fire stations in Metro Manila. Fatima Felix, fire officer 3 of the Bureau of Fire Protection National Capital Region (BFP-NCR) stated that the fire was declared under control by 10:38 a.m. 25 firetrucks were deployed to extinguish the fire.

On the other hand, BFP officials are currently conducting a probe to determine the cause of the incident. Initial reports revealed that there were welding activities in the area and the fire officials will check if the university has acquired a hot works permit. The officials will also investigate if the university administration held liabilities.
No casualties were reported from the incident but a firefighter obtained minor injuries. Fire officer 3 Chito Arboleda suffered lacerations on his left hand. Due to the incident, the university administration cancelled the classes and evacuated the students for their safety. The UE administration has already issued an official statement in their Facebook page:

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The estimated damage to property is still being determined. UE Manila, as well as the other UE campuses, are on heightened security alert to ensure the safety of everyone in the UE community.
