50 killed in Orlando mass shootings; shooter pledges allegiance with ISIS

The terrible incident has been declared as the "deadliest terror attack in US history" after the 9/11.

ORLANDO, Florida-- In an act of terrorism and hate, at least 50 people were killed while more than 50 were seriously injured after an American-Afghan man gunned down the Pulse gay night club in Orlando. According to a news report published in CNN, a total of 100 partygoers were also held hostage for three hours during the attack.

Law enforcement officials have identified the shooter as Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, a 29 years old US citizen from Port St. Lucie in Florida. Mateen, whose parents were Afghan but was born and raised in New York, carried an assault rifle and pistol and opened fire at Pulse night club in the early hours of Sunday, killing and injuring more than a hundred innocent people in the process.

The mass shooting, which was described as the "deadliest mass shooting in the history of US", has been classified as a terror attact of the extremist militant group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, more popularly known as ISIS. During the attack, Mateen phoned 911 and declared his allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

State police spokesman David Procopio confirmed in an email that Mateen pledged alliance to the Islamic terrorist group shortly before he was killed as the Orlando police fired a shot that killed Mateen and freed his hostages.

"During a conference call with federal law enforcement officials a short time ago, Massachusetts State Police and other local law enforcement authorities learned that the Orlando nightclub gunman, during his rampage, pledged allegiance to ISIS and referenced the Tsarnaev brothers."

On the other hand, ISIS acknowledged the gunman as one of its fighters and said that the attact was perpetrated in the name of their group. This was the first time ISIS has claimed responsibility over an attack in US soil. The terror group's Amaq news agency said last Sunday:

"The armed attack that targeted a gay night club in the city of Orlando in the American state of Florida which left over 100 people dead or injured was carried out by an Islamic State fighter."

Meanwhile, in an interview with NBC News, Mateen's father, Mir Seddique insisted that the attack has "nothing to do with religion". Senior Seddique said that it was more of an "act of hate" rather than an "act of terror" because of Mateen's discrimination against gays. He said his son became angry when he saw to men kissing in Florida months ago.

"We are saying we are apologizing for the whole incident. We weren't aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country."
