Healthy vegetable kangkong can also harm you!

The vegetable can be dangerous if not cleaned and cooked well.

Water spinach or kangkong as it is known in the Philippines, is a healthy vegetable that is common in many Filipino dishes. It is even cooked on its own as 'adobong kangkong', a dish wherein the vegetable is simmered in soy sauce and vinegar. But did you know that it can also be harmful to your health? Kangkong belongs to the group of noxious weeds, which are can be harmful to agricultural or horticultural crops, humans and livestock, and/or the local ecosystems and natural habitats.

Why does it belong to the said group? This is because kangkong thrives anywhere and everywhere, even without human care and maintenance.

However, kangkong is completely harmless if cleaned and cooked right. It's like any other vegetable if you practice cooking it well. The most dangerous way to cook kangkong is through blanching wherein the vegetable is just dipped in boiling water.
It is highly recommended not to blanch kangkong as it harbors Fasciolopsis buski, a large parasitic intestinal fluke, in larval cysts form.

If the vegetable is not cooked well, the bacteria will stick to human intestines if consumed. This would then cause abdominal pain, indigestion, and allergic reactions. It could even lead to death if not treated.

Therefore, before eating kangkong, make sure it is cleaned thoroughly and cooked properly to ensure that the bacteria it houses will die.
