Marcos now buried at Libingan ng mga Bayani

The former president was buried with "simple and private" funeral rites.

On Friday past noon, November 18, former president Ferdinand Marcos was buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

His burial serves as a closure to his family and supporters while it reopens wounds inflicted by his 21-year rule streaked by human rights violations.

According to Chief Superintendent Oscar Albayalde, the Marcos family requested a "simple and private" funeral rites that were carried out late Friday morning.

Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa told the media that three helicopters brought the members of Marcos family and the remains of the former president at the Laoag International Airport.

Meanwhile, Vice President Leni Robredo strongly rebuked the burial and reiterated that he is no hero.

"Like a thief in the night, the Marcos family deliberately hid the information of burying former President Marcos today from the Filipino people," Robredo said.

Barry Gutierrez, counsel for the anti-Marcos court petitioners, asserted the burial was illegal as appeals against it were dominant.

"It's not really surprising that this is happening. Marcos flouted the law when he was still alive, and even at his burial, he is still breaking the law," Gutierrez told Agence France-Presse.

"We are shocked and angered," Gutierrez added.

Groups who oppose the Marcos family were mad at the surprise burial and condemned the Marcoses as deceitful. They also said they would mark the day with a "Black Friday" protest.

"This is a continuing deception, deviousness, abuse, and underhandedness of the Marcos family. They are just continuing the abuses and atrocities committed during the martial law regime," Albay Representative Edcel Lagman said.
