Over 100 deaths from Indian train accident

The Indian express train derailed and killed over 100 people.

On early Sunday, November 20, an Indian express train was derailed and killed over 100 people. According to the police, it is one of the country's worst rail accidents in years.

The passengers were woken by a deafening noise and thud as they searched desperately for their loved-ones. The train was even carrying a wedding party as it is marriage season in India right now.

"We woke up to a great thud this morning. It was pitch dark and the noise was deafening," one passenger told the media during an interview.

"I am lucky to be alive and safe. It was a near-death experience for us," he added.

Most of the passengers were sleeping when 14 carriages derailed from tracks in a distant area outside the northern city of Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh state.

It is the tragedy since 2010 when a passenger train crashed into a freight train in the eastern state of West Bengal, killing 146 and injuring over 200.

"The death toll has topped 100 now," additional police director-general Daljit Singh Chawdhary said.

Rushed to the nearby hospitals were 150 injured and the medical establishments were on high alert after the morning incident.
